What is the difference between EMG and NCS?
A nerve conduction study measures how electrical signals travel through selected nerves using electrodes placed on the skin. Needle EMG records electrical activity within selected muscles using a small needle electrode. The tests are often performed together because they examine different parts of the nerve-and-muscle system.
Is EMG/NCS testing painful?
Nerve conduction testing produces brief electrical pulses that may feel like quick shocks or tingling. Needle EMG may cause temporary discomfort when the electrode enters a muscle. Most patients complete the test without sedation, although sensitivity and the number of tested areas vary.
How should I prepare for EMG/NCS testing?
Bathe before testing and avoid lotions, creams, or oils because they may interfere with surface electrodes. Wear comfortable clothing and tell the office about blood thinners, bleeding conditions, pacemakers, implanted defibrillators, or other electrical medical devices before the study.
How long does an EMG/NCS test take?
The appointment length depends on the symptoms, body areas examined, and number of nerves or muscles tested. Many studies take approximately 30 to 60 minutes, although some may be shorter or longer. Testing is tailored to the specific diagnostic question.
